Ride a bike, share your experience and love. When I go biking, I repeat a mantra of the day's sensations: bright sun, blue sky, warm breeze, blue jay's call, ice melting and so on. This helps me transcend the traffic, ignore the clamorings of work, leave all the mind theaters behind and focus on nature instead. I still must abide by the rules of the road, of biking, of gravity. But I am mentally far away from civilization. The world is breaking someone else's heart. ~Diane Ackerman

Spinlister - Awesome People!

Spinlister is a community of like minded people like you and me.  We ride bikes, bikes are a part of our daily lives.  Some of us have a bike or two we can share and Spinlister connect us with those people who need a ride. It maybe for a day or weekend, like when Jamie and I spent time in SF.  I would have loved to use this service while in SF, instead I rented some wobbly "hybrid" to make the journey into Tiburon.

What Spinlister is All About:

Spinlister is a marketplace that lets individual bike owners rent out their bikes to locals, travelers, and cyclists looking to explore. We've been live since April 1st in SF and NYC and opened up our national network to Listers on September 24th.

What's Happening:

List a Bike? National Access.
As of Wednesday, we enabled new bike-listers (users who list a bike) and all current users to get access to our national pool of over 500 bikes.

Ride for free!

Any unrented bike on Spinlister is now free for the first day, anywhere in the U.S.

NYC & SF Still Open to Anyone.
We'll still be open to both bike-renters and bike-listers in New York City and San Francisco.

What This Means:

If you're a user of Spinlister you now have access to our national network of bikes, many of which are free to rent for the first day. If you're not a member of Spinlister, list your bike and we'll grant you access to the entire national network.

Other quick facts:

- Bike owners can make up to $150 a week renting out their bikes.
- We have a national network of over 500 bikes available for rent (to listers only for now).
- We guarantee the safety of bicycles on our system up to $5000.
- Our bike prices average half of existing bike rental shops.

- Any unrented bike on our system is free for the first day!

We'll launched the national beta on Wednesday Sept. 24th.

Of course, happy to answer any questions or hop on a call!

Not surprised if true.

"Mark Cavendish's former team manager Rolf Aldag believes the British sprinter has to leave Team Sky and has hinted that the two could soon be work together at Omega Pharma-QuickStep.
Cavendish has made it clear he wants to leave Team Sky but negotiations with team manager Dave Brialsford have stalled, with reports that Team Sky is insisting for a payment of a million pounds before rescinding Cavendish's contract." Read More ...

Fixie Bike Show at the LA Velodrome

Last Saturday was the first Fixie Bike Show at the La Velodrome.  There were a number of submissions that ranged from FGFS, true track bikes, messenger fixies, vintage track bikes, franken-fixies and etc.

My favorite was a Rock Lobster.  Since the early 1990's I have had a fondness for Rock Lobsters.  Paul Sadoff of RL is a great guy.  I had the opportunity to meet him a few years back in San Diego.

If I ever put down some money for a custom bike, RL is on the very short list of builders.  I want a fixed gear bike with standard road geometry and TWO water bottle mounts.

Here are a few photos I took.

Are Big Gears a Thing of the Past?

I often come across vintage bicycle pictures with guys on what seem to be track bikes with ginormous gearing.  What's that all about?

These pictures always remind me of Meme, who loves to mash big gears with his big legs.

LAVRA Night

Saturday night Meme and I headed to the LA Velodrome, with its steep banks and fast paced racing. We got there at about 6 pm, making it just in time for the women's Scratch race. That night we saw Keirin, Scratch and Madison racing.  The Madison proved to be the most exciting, watching racers fling their partner across the track.  It was calculated chaos!

Olympian Jimmy Watkins was there.  He raced men's Keirin and part of the Scratch before dropping out.

Santiago Canyon - FIXED

Yesterday, Michael and I rode Santiago Canyon via our track bikes.  The total trip ended up being about 70 miles.  I was a little disappointed on the distance because I had it in my mind this trip would be somewhere closer to 80 miles.  Despite my error in distance the ride proved to be scenic and relaxing.

Michael ... Walking?
We started our ride at Yorba Regional Park and we were welcomed with a ridiculously steep Imperial Hwy. I was running 46 x 15t and chose to zig-zag across the road. It was the only thing I could do to get up Imperial Hwy.  Micheal, was running 46 x 14t and this proved too much gearing. He was forced to walk parts of the hill.

Once at the top, Imperial becomes Cannon and we "bombed" down it.  Michael's 14t helped and I spun like a crazy to keep contact.   There were some kids in a beat up Toyota van who opened their sliding door to offer us an additional tow.  Michael and I were definitely not interested.

Broadway and PCH in Laguna is our rest spot.  We stopped in Laguna to fill up our water bottles and refuel on Cliff Bars and Corn Nuts.  Corn Nuts are my current favorite ride treat.

MOUNTAIN FIXED: Mt. Wilson, Mt. Baldy and Mt. Palomar

It's been at least a little while since I first hopped on my track bike.  Ahhh, the beauty and simplicity, art and function, my track bike is easily becoming my GO TO Bike.

I started out riding it on my rollers in the garage, logging countless hours while listening to classic rock or Fox News in the early mornings and late evenings.  Then one day I decided to take it out on the road, Glendora Mountain Road.

I had no expectations, I just wanted to get to Sierra Madre and Glendora Mountain Road.  I did, and I kept going.  Then I made it to the gate and I kept going.  That day I made it to the maintenance shed.  I was thoroughly impressed with myself and after some time I finally made it to Mt. Baldy.

I've been to Mt. Baldy numerous times on my track bike and I've made a few fixie friends along the way.  I have a new goal and would like to see if anyone else is interested.  I want to ride back to back to back, Mt. Wilson, then Mt. Baldy and finally finish off with Mt. Palomar.  Three mountains one track bike.

Origins of Mountain Biking - Joe Breeze

"Who 'invented' the mountain bike? Where was the birth of dirt? Who was the first to throw a bike down a hill? A bunch of hippies from Marin County California, that's who. Here, Outer Edge magazine speaks to Joe Breeze, one of the so-called Godfathers of mountain biking..."

Rocking Out Fixie Style While Heading to Mt Baldy

Today John and I road fixed gear up Glendora Mountain Road to Mt Baldy.  I wasn't sure if GMR would be open due to this years Williams fire.  We decided to meet at the gate and sure enough, GMR was open!!!

Above is John riding up to the gate.  I hung out right on the center line, for Michael at the CLR Effect. I snapped this photo and as John approached, I could hear the faint sound of Counting Crows.

Potato, Potato! A Quick After Work Ride

So after work I road to Potato.  I didn't really have Potato in mind when I woke up this morning and thought about my ride.  I new my ride was going to be on the mountain and I had a bit of difficulty deciding which bike to take, the CX Kona or the hardtail Trek.  I ultimately decided on the Trek.

So the idea to ride to Potato came to me a couple hours before I left work.  Daylight is starting to creep away but I really wanted to maximize my ride. I wanted to get a good work out so I few calculations in my head and I knew I could make it to Potato.

My Trek has gears, which was a nice treat while blasting up the mountain.  I was at awe by the seemingly unlimited amount of gear choices and I was at the top of Potato in no time.

Michael Rides 101 miles FIXED (Anaheim Hills to San Diego)

Michael did a truly epic ride from Anaheim Hills to San Diego via his fixed gear bike.  101 miles, on his Wabi fixed gear with a gear ratio of 46t x 14t.

He said at about mile 85 miles he was really wishing he could coast.

Mountain Unicycling at Romero Canyon Santa Barbara

This came over from UniGeezer the other day.  This guy is crazy.  I first met him two years ago at the Fargo Street Hill Climb.

"They say things happen in "3's". Well on Labor day Monday, I got my three! It was a 220 mile round trip to Santa Barbara, this time to Romero canyon.

#1 was a bad ankle sprain when I dropped to a slanted rock and had an inversion sprain.
#2 was a super painful calf injury when I dismounted off the back and my calf got skewered on the handle of my quick release collar, that somehow was partly open!
#3 happened when I finished the ride and got to my car. I wanted to pull it into a shady spot to change into some dry clothes. As I backed into a spot, I smacked into a frickin tree that was in my blind spot! Did about $700 damage. Other than all that, everything went great!"

Anaheim Hills to Newport - FIXED

Today Kevin and I rode to Newport.  We kept the pace lively with the help of two other guys and made it to Newport in no time.

It was a great day of riding.  Clear skies and not too hot.

This is us at the beach.  Kevin rode geared while I opted for to ride fixed gear.

What a champ. Kevin, with the help of two other guys, kept the pace up.  We had a decent paceline all the way to Newport.

The beach is in sight!  Clear blue skies!  Nice day to be at the beach.

Once we entered Newport we headed to the beach for a few photos, proof we made it!  Then it was off to the a liquor store up the way to buy, corn nuts, Gatorade and get some ice for our water bottles.

Kevin had plans to meet Tina down in Newport but it was early so I convinced him to ride back to Yorba Regional Park with me.

Late Sunday Coffeedence

I found this a couple of days ago on Prolly's site.  I love climbing and if you climbed it, you DO deserve to bomb down it!

How to stop your Fixie

Always a popular topic, how the hell do you stop?

How to stop your Fixie from Pure Fix Cycles on Vimeo.
Our latest episode on Pure Fix TV is all about the infamous skid-stop. The skid-stop is a stopping technique that many fixed gear riders employ to help them more briskly come to a stop. In this episode, we'll teach you different techniques on how to best use this stopping method, how it helps, and how to stay safe, while doing it. Enjoy!
