City transportation officials last week served up a lesson to restaurant owners and food delivery bicyclists on how to comply with a new city law designed to make city streets – and sidewalks safe for pedestrians.

The City Council passed a menu of regulations last November, designed to crack down on rogue cyclists who are notorious for running stop signs and red lights, mowing down pedestrians and peddling the wrong way along busy streets.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed into law the package of bills that requires commercial cyclists and their employers to follow the new safety regulations or face a series of stiff fines and penalties. Continue Reading ...

Here is a chill mix of several events that we attended in California during the month of April. Including VitalMTB Super Sessions and Sea Otter. Due to various circumstances such as riding a lot of bikes, spending too much time in hospitals, drinking too much beer and waiting too long for our food at multiple Denny's locations we did not film as much as we hoped. But we shot enough for you to know we had a good time and rode some god damn bicycles with our friends.

Glendora Mountain Road to Mt Baldy - F I X E D ! ! !

Its been a while, but I couldn't resist when John P texted me Sunday morning.

Saturday Mike and I rode to the ski lifts, and Sunday I worked on the yard.  By Monday morning, I was tired, but I managed to haul my butt up GMR once again.  If I said it was easy, I'd be lying.  It was a bear and by the time I made it home I was exhausted.

John P and I stopped at the shed and just before Fork Plus 8.  The 5 minute breaks were very welcomed.

This is John P grinding up GRR between Fork Plus 5.85 and ~7.  I was very happy to see Fork Plus 8.29.

I'm thinking GMR fixed is too much @ 48 X 16.  I need to switch to something much easier.

Wow, when I read this I was surprised.  Danilo, really?  Come on, this is the umpteenth time and did you think you could beat the system.  Limits of detection have gotten so much better.  I think Danilo is done.  Such a shame.

PONTE DI LEGNO, Italy, May 24, 2013 (AFP) - Italian cyclist Danilo Di Luca, currently competing at the 96th Giro d'Italia, has been "provisionally suspended" by the UCI after testing positive for EPO in an out-of-competition test before the race.
Di Luca, who has already served a ban for failing a doping test at the Giro and has been embroiled in other doping affairs, tested positive for the banned blood booster at the end of April. He risks a heavy sanction if found guilty. Continue Reading ...

Half The Road

Follow Link to Watch Video ...

"Half The Road" trailer from kevin tokstad on Vimeo.
Modern society believes that women hold up half the sky when it comes to equality and progression. So in the sport of professional cycling, why aren’t women receiving half the road?

HALF THE ROAD is a documentary film that explores the world of women’s professional cycling, focusing on both the love of sport and the pressing issues of inequality that modern-day female riders face in a male dominated sport. With footage from some of the world’s best UCI races to interviews with Olympians, World Champions, rookies, coaches, managers, officials, doctors and family members, HALF THE ROAD offers a unique insight to the drive, dedication, and passion it takes for a female cyclist to thrive. Both on and off the bike, the voices and advocates of women’s pro cycling take the audience on a journey of enlightenment, depth, strength, love, humor and best of all, change & growth.

In addition to the international race footage and athlete interviews, the film also follows director/athlete Kathryn Bertine’s quest to make the 2012 Olympics during her first year racing professionally for Team Colavita. Bertine, a three-time national champion of St. Kitts and Nevis, explores the issues faced when smaller nations try to make strides in a sport that has no history of tradition or support within their culture. The title HALF THE ROAD comes from a segment of the film where the president of a small cycling federation quotes the old adage, "Women hold up half the sky" in reference to equality. Our documentary explores the idea that, If women hold up half the sky, then the women's peloton deserves 'half the road' of opportunity, growth, support & equality within professional cycling.

Coming Clean - Alright, Alright, I Bought a New Bike!

About two months ago, I finally talked Jamie into letting me buy a new bike.  A month ago, I purchased a new Specialized Tarmac.

It's a great bike!  Its light, its fast, its pretty.  It came equipped with RED.  After using it a few weeks, I like it better than my Ultegra.

So the Cervelo takes a back seat and the Tarmac is the new baby in house.

Oh yeah, in case you were wondering about my fixed gear adventures, I still ride the fixie much more than the Tarmac.  The Tarmac is my Bud's ride bike.

Running the Tour De France?

Trailer - Zoe Goes Runnging - The Film: Running the Tour de France from Alexander Kreher Photography on Vimeo.
Zoë Romano will be the first person to RUN the route of the Tour de France. I will join her to document that adventure.

This summer Richmonder Zoë Romano will become the first person ever to RUN the Tour de France. Zoë is such an inspiring person with a really exciting adventure laying in front of her - I think her story not only deserves to be documented, it needs to be!

On May 18, Zoë will set out on an 9-week trek in Nice and log 30-35 miles a day until she reaches the finish in Paris on July 20 (one day ahead of the peloton). That’s right-- more than a marathon every day.

I will accompany her to France and produce a full-length documentary about her journey.
Zoë and I previously worked together on “Street Dreams”, an award-winning short documentary which I created about Zoë’s run across the United States in 2011. (https://vimeo.com/27590074)

Boston’s streets aren’t wide enough for bikes and cars. It’s as simple as that.

To me, it’s not a debate about reckless drivers or reckless bicyclists. It’s about inches. Inches is how close my ’07 Toyota — 21⁄2 tons of steel and iron and chrome — comes to the unprotected bicyclists I pass every day.

I’ve been driving forever. Bicyclists still make me nervous. My nightmare: that I may not swerve fast enough to avoid a bicyclist who comes into my lane. Or worse: It’s nighttime or it’s raining and I don’t see them at all. And I hit them.

How do you ever live with that? Continue Reading

Diamond Bar to Newport Beach - Fixed

Yesterday Michael and I rode to the beach.  It was an early ride, on the road by 5:30 am, but it was well worth it.

I get a bit of anxiety, whenever we start from Mike's house.  You see, Mike lives at the very top of Grand Ave., in DB and it's no joke of a hill climb. After 68 plus miles of riding, this last bit of climbing hurts so bad.

With that said, when we headed out I was tired and feeling anxious.  The anxiety wore off as we made our way through Brea Canyon and Kraemer Blvd.  By SART, it was a distant memory.

Once on SART we were greeted with a monster of a headwind.  The headwind slowly wore me down and I was beat by the time we made it to Newport.  I did my best and my portion of the pulls to get us closer to Newport but with each mile, that darn headwind wouldn't let up.

I needed to be home and in my house by 10:30. It was Adam's last soccer game of the Spring season so the stop off in Newport was short.  I ate, Mike went to the bathroom and we were off, heading back the way we came.

On SART, Mike's speed kept creeping up and by Glassell he was cruising at 24 mph.  I held on as long as I could but eventually dropped off his pace.

On the streets and heading back to Brea Canyon a group of roadies shouted out, "Get some gears!"  I took this as a compliment as we were 60 miles into our epic fixed gear ride.

On Brea Canyon, I started to feel some minor cramping so I slowed down a bit.  Mike rode on and we met up just before Diamond Bar Blvd.  From there we rode together back to his house.

We finished this ride in just under 4 hours.  I was home in plenty if time to catch Adam's final soccer game of the season.

MORGAN HILL, CA (BRAIN) — Representing a significant investment in aerodynamic testing, Specialized this week unveiled its own on-site bicycle-specific wind tunnel, enabling the company to apply aero principles across its full product line.

Due to expense, off-site wind tunnel testing has been almost exclusively the domain of high-end road race and time trial bikes. Now, with its own facility and team of aerodynamic experts under one roof, Specialized can expand tunnel testing all the way down to its Globe commuter bike line, the company said in a statement. "It's Not That Kinda Ride," Glendora Mountain Road - Fixed

"It's not that kinda ride," is what I kept telling myself today while riding up GMR to the maintenance shed.  Fixed gear @ 49 x 16 and over 100 degree temps make for a potentially miserable ride.

"It's not that kinda ride, slow it down..."

I have a tendency to ride harder than I should more often than not and today was not the day to do that.  So as I made my way up GMR I kept reminding myself to take it slow, enjoy the scenery and drink often.

It took me about 1:04 minutes to get to the shed from GMR/Sierra Madre, not too bad but definitely not a PR.  I wanted to push on harder, but this was the first time up GMR on my fixed gear bike since a number of weeks and it was hot.

On the way down, I met up with Matt.  I headed back up with him for a few, mostly to talk and catch up from our last conversation.

I was hoping to cross paths with Annette from GlendoraMTNRoad.com but I never saw her.  Next time, Annette.

Scene from the top of Monroe.  When I say Maintenance Shed, I really mean Monroe.

Matt @ over fifty years of age still kills it up the mountain weekly!

John P - Music Request

If you ride up and down GMR on a regular basis you probably know John P.  He's the guy on a black fixed gear bike who blasts great tunes while heading up the mountain.

I met up with him on Saturday and requested he add Rainbow, "Man on the Silver Mountain," to his play list.

Here it is John. Good tunes to keep the pace up.

Im a wheel, Im a wheel
I can roll, I can feel
And you can't stop me turning
Cause Im the sun, Im the sun
I can move, I can run
But you'll never stop me burning

* come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Someones screaming my name
Come and make me holy again
Im the man on the silver mountain
Im the man on the silver mountain

Im the day, Im the day
I can show you the way
And look Im right beside you
Im the night, Im the night
Im the dark and the light
With eyes that see inside you

* x 2

Just look at me and listen
Im the man, the man, give you my hand
Come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Im the man on the silver mountain
Im the man on the silver mountain
Im the night the light
The black and the white
The man on the silver mountain

BETH, I hear you calling, but I can't come home right now ...

BETH from anonymous content on Vimeo.
You know a song is a classic when it gets parodied. The legendary KISS ballad, “Beth” is no exception. This short film, directed by Brian Billow, chronicles the completely fictitious story of the song’s inspiration. The Peter Criss character's dialogue stays true to the song's lyrics

Early Ride to Mt Baldy - Geared

It was an early ride to Mt Baldy today.  Adam's game was at 9 am so I was out of the house and heading to the base of Glendora Mountain Road and Sierra Madre by 5:40 am. I planned to leave by 5:30 am. I was running late.

I love this time of year.  I can leave the house early and not have to overdress.  The days are longer and the weather is warm.

I was making great time, and just after Big Dalton Canyon Road, I spotted John's car. At every turn, I expected to see him.  Mentally I was chasing him down, and this helped to keep the pace up.  With every turn, I would look across the road expecting to see John.

MM 10.49, no John.  By the first saddle, still no sight of him.  John must be moving.  MM 8.44, nothing.  Ah, but at last I turn the bend just past MM 8.23 (I think that's it) and I see a little speck across the ridge and up the road.  That's gotta be him.

I pick up my pace with hopes of catching him by MM 7.26, just before the decent preceding the Maintenance Shed.  I turn another corner and I see two riders.  One of them is John for sure but they make the decent before me.

I finally catch John on the climb just after the second saddle.  I knew I would, he rides fixed and I am on my geared Specialized.  I ride up to him and say hello and together we catch up to the other rider (Who also happens to be named John).

So I ride with John "P" and John "From Glendora" to the shed.  John from Glendora continues on and I stop with John P to rest and talk.  I hustled up GMR to catch them so a 5 minute break was much needed.  John P and I talked a bit before he headed back down and I to Mt Baldy.

The ride to Mt Baldy was a quiet, lonely ride.  John from Glendora had a good pace going and I didn't expect to connect with him.  I kept looking off into the distance to see if I could see John but nothing.  He was gone.

Or so I thought.

At about Fork + 7 something, I spotted John and caught up with him soon after.  We rode together into Mt Baldy.  At Baldy he headed back the way he came and I headed down back home.

It was a great ride, I got to see both Johns and made it back in time to watch Adam's game.  Good times and I look forward to my next adventure.

Title: In 1897, a Bicycle Superhighway Was the Future of California Transit
By: Brian Merchant

"In 1897, a wealthy American businessman named Horace Dobbins began construction on a private, for-profit bicycle superhighway that would stretch from Pasadena to downtown Los Angeles. It may seem like a preposterous notion now—everyone knows Angelenos don't get out of their cars—but at the time, amidst the height of a pre-automobile worldwide cycling boom, the idea attracted the attention of some hugely powerful players."

Glendora Moutain Road to Mt Baldy - Geared

Today Michael, Randy and I rode to Mt Baldy by way of GMR.  It was a good fast ride.  We met up with John @ the Shed.

Baldy Village was pretty smokey due to the current fires in Banning and Ventura.

Since we finished up with Baldy early we decided on a lap around Ganesha and Bonelli before heading home.
