Potato, Potato! A Quick After Work Ride

So after work I road to Potato.  I didn't really have Potato in mind when I woke up this morning and thought about my ride.  I new my ride was going to be on the mountain and I had a bit of difficulty deciding which bike to take, the CX Kona or the hardtail Trek.  I ultimately decided on the Trek. 

So the idea to ride to Potato came to me a couple hours before I left work.  Daylight is starting to creep away but I really wanted to maximize my ride. I wanted to get a good work out so I few calculations in my head and I knew I could make it to Potato.

My Trek has gears, which was a nice treat while blasting up the mountain.  I was at awe by the seemingly unlimited amount of gear choices and I was at the top of Potato in no time.

Michael Rides 101 miles FIXED (Anaheim Hills to San Diego)

Michael did a truly epic ride from Anaheim Hills to San Diego via his fixed gear bike.  101 miles, on his Wabi fixed gear with a gear ratio of 46t x 14t.

He said at about mile 85 miles he was really wishing he could coast.

Mountain Unicycling at Romero Canyon Santa Barbara

This came over from UniGeezer the other day.  This guy is crazy.  I first met him two years ago at the Fargo Street Hill Climb.

"They say things happen in "3's". Well on Labor day Monday, I got my three! It was a 220 mile round trip to Santa Barbara, this time to Romero canyon.

#1 was a bad ankle sprain when I dropped to a slanted rock and had an inversion sprain.
#2 was a super painful calf injury when I dismounted off the back and my calf got skewered on the handle of my quick release collar, that somehow was partly open!
#3 happened when I finished the ride and got to my car. I wanted to pull it into a shady spot to change into some dry clothes. As I backed into a spot, I smacked into a frickin tree that was in my blind spot! Did about $700 damage. Other than all that, everything went great!"

Anaheim Hills to Newport - FIXED

Today Kevin and I rode to Newport.  We kept the pace lively with the help of two other guys and made it to Newport in no time.

It was a great day of riding.  Clear skies and not too hot.

This is us at the beach.  Kevin rode geared while I opted for to ride fixed gear.  

What a champ. Kevin, with the help of two other guys, kept the pace up.  We had a decent paceline all the way to Newport.  

The beach is in sight!  Clear blue skies!  Nice day to be at the beach.

Once we entered Newport we headed to the beach for a few photos, proof we made it!  Then it was off to the a liquor store up the way to buy, corn nuts, Gatorade and get some ice for our water bottles.

Kevin had plans to meet Tina down in Newport but it was early so I convinced him to ride back to Yorba Regional Park with me.

Late Sunday Coffeedence

Turnbull Canyon - FIXED

Sunday's fire near GMR put the kibosh on our GMR to Mt. Baldy ride.  We decided on a quick ride thru Turnbull Canyon.  Michael and I were pressed for time so we kept a good pace and were done in 2.5 hours. 

The trip took us thru Diamond Bar, La Puente, Whittier, Hacienda Heights and some other cities.

Yes we rode fixed gear.  More and more these days this is the only way I roll!

"Today Kevin and I had an adventure.  Since late 2011, Kevin had it in his head to ride to Mt. Baldy.  He kept a good training routine and sure enough, he made it to Baldy today! Great job, Kevin. It only gets easier."

Three and a half years after thinking about riding to Baldy Village, I finally made it. Despite a few health setbacks, I can now check it off that list.  Like many other BicycleFriends rides, it starts with a Plan from Jason.

"Just make it to Fork plus 8.3 and I'll buy you a beer, as it is all downhill to Baldy Village" So a year ago after I stopped taking blood thinners and was cleared to ride again.  I followed Jason's easy 4 step  plan that goes something like this:

Step 1 - ride to maintenance shed

Step 2 - ride a short distance further to a spot known as Fork. (it is located where GMR turns and goes down to East Fork. It's also the start of Glendora Ridge Road)

Step 3 - add distance (about a mile per ride) by observing milepost  markers

Step 4 - after riding to Fork plus 8.3, continue on easy downhill to Baldy Village

I have ridden with Jason enough to know that he is challenged with distance, difficulty, grade etc.  We still talk about the day he talked me into an easy mountain bike ride on Sunset Ridge. I think he posted something. Short story - extra climbing, double the distance, & 95* temps resulting in heat stroke.

So, I checked out Annette's Glendora Mountain Road website to verify Jason's plan, which actually was not too bad. (except for the downhill part)

With Jason posting my results and coaching me along the way, I made it to Fork +8.3 a couple of weeks ago and we scheduled the celebratory ride for today, September 1.  

Jason's plan: start at 6am (Jason riding fixie) and meet up with me when he reached GMR in Glendora.  I modified the plan after suffering in the heat on Glendora Ridge, last week.

I left at 530 am and Jason would catch me sometime after the first saddle. Well, I made it to the maintenance shed with no Jason, feeling pretty awesome. Only to find out that Jason was delayed when he stopped to  talk to Christian at the bottom of GMR.

After about 5 minutes of much needed rest at the shed, Jason and another fixie rider showed up. We chatted for a few seconds and then took off.  Stopped for a quick bottle change at about F+3.6 dropped down to F+4.5 and started the climb to F+8.3. 

I think I slowed Jason down, but he quickened my pace until about F+7. I found what little shade there was and stopped as I was starting to cramp. Jason continue about a tenth of a mile and help a rider with a flat, who was dropped by her friends. Despite what his coworkers say about him, Jason really is a good guy with helpful demeanor. 

 

Fork Plus 5 or 6 or 7.  Kevin Rides On

 

With the flat fixed and my legs straightened out we continue with Jason asking about how I was feeling. It was then when he came clean.  "To be honest, after 8.3 it's not really all downhill". 

"WHAT?..." I exclaimed know that there was another 1.5 miles of more gentle climbing according to Annette. 

I celebrated at F+8.3 nonetheless. And we continued.

I MADE IT!!!

Jason had The Baldy Village Inn open early just so he could buy me that beer.  Thanks Jason!

A short 45 minute downhill ride and I was home.

Going, Going, Gone ... Have a Good Ride Christian and Croy

Today I met up  with Christian at the base of GMR.  He was getting his gear and ride together so I left telling him catch me if he can.  Well, I knew he would and it wasn't long at all before Christian the Human Missile blew past me.  Sorry no pictures, he was going to fast!

Another missile was Croy.  He and I always seem to be in a rush and it wasn't long before I dropped of his pace.  I did happen to get this picture of him going though.

Glendora Mountain Road - FIXED, "Another Fixed Gear Rider Spotted!"

Well not exactly.  I few days ago I received an email from John. 

As it turns out he rides GMR daily via his fixed gear bike.  I let him know I would be heading up GMR at about 6:30 am and we crossed paths today just after Newmans. 

Good rider and he kept a good clip to the Maintenance Shed.  It was nice meeting a fellow Fixed Gear mountain rider.  We definitely must ride again.

Mid-Week, GMR FIXED

Yesterday night I rode up GMR via my fixed gear bike.  It was hot and I was hurting the whole way up.  I typically can ride from Pomona to GMR to Baldy with one water bottle.  Yesterday night was hot with a brutal headwind.  By the time I reached the maintenance shed, I had less then 1/4 water left.

It was brutal.

On another note, on the way down I saw Matt and Wayne.  If I had more time, I would have turned around to talk.  Next time!

Cervelo T1 - I Want, I Want, I Want ...

The Cervelo T1, I absolutely love this bike but everything about it is really what I don't need in a bike; very track specific geometry, steep angles, ridiculously stiff, no brakes and no water bottle mounts.  I ride fixed gear, but its all street riding and long distances.  This bike is everything I don't need, but want.  What's up with that!
