"Why do cyclists ride in the middle of the road? Because they're allowed to: a poster from the Department for Transport advises "Cyclists. Ride central on narrow roads."
See those potholes? Not good for your suspension, are they? To cyclists, they're not just inconvenient; they're lethal. The cyclist up ahead might be in the middle of the road for a few seconds in order to avoid a big gash in the ground. Cyclists are expert pothole - spotters. Use this inside knowledge to prevent costly damage to your car's suspension."

9 Things Drivers Need to Stop Saying in the Bike vs. Car Debate
9 Things Drivers Need to Stop Saying in the Bike vs. Car Debate

"There are certain things guaranteed to set off an internet firestorm. Talk about climate change, mention Monsanto, or bring up the treatment of women in video games. And you can, especially in recent years, piss off a whole bunch of people simply by writing about bikes and cars. Nothing seems to bring out the angry caps lock and personal attacks faster than transportation issues.
A recent report showing more cyclists are dying on US streets prompted a remarkable number of stories about cyclist safety. And in the comments section of each, people rehashed the same tired arguments over and over.
So, before the next big wave of internet arguing, I propose we retire a few overused and underwhelming opinions in the bikes vs. cars debate. Though I drive and bike, my allegiances skew toward cyclists (feel free to scroll straight the comments and yell at me). But beyond my personal judgments lie a great many studies and data showing most of the pro-motorist arguments just don’t hold up. I know it’s hard to be wrong, especially on the internet, but here are a few sentences I hope we see less of in the future."

"Ford Motor Co. recently released a new YouTube video for its 2015 Mustang that features Kayle Leogrande, a competitive cyclist who served a two-year suspension for doping during his racing career, indirectly leading to the downfall of American sports icon Lance Armstrong.
The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspended Leogrande from cycling in 2008, and his doping case ultimately led investigators to Armstrong’s team, sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service."

"I was searching for an e-mail the other day and I stumbled across one that I wrote about 10 years ago. In a nutshell I had gently poked fun at a friend for going to see the Pixies at the Plaza of Nations, rather than coming along with us to see the Unicorns at the Cultch.
(It’s kind of funny that I even bother mentioning actual band names in this article, but it feels important to me. Deep down I’m hoping the readers will understand how insane that decision was, rather than thinking “what the hell is grandpa talking about?”)
Within two e-mails the conversation had devolved into a passionate and nasty eruption of crazy. It was just totally insane. And as I read through it, all I could think was “Man…I don’t care about anything this much any more.”
And perhaps that’s what “getting old” is all about: realizing that trivial shit isn’t all that important."

"Every morning Canadian neuroscientist Brian Christie, PhD, gives his brain an extra boost. We're not talking about tossing back multiple strong shots of espresso or playing one of those mind-training games advertised all over Facebook.
"I hop on my bike, go to the gym for 45 minutes, then ride the rest of the way to work," says Christie. "When I get to my desk, my brain is at peak activity for a few hours." After his mental focus sputters to a halt later in the day, he jump-starts it with another short spin to run errands.
Ride, work, ride, repeat. It's a scientifically proven system. In a recent study in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, scientists found that people scored higher on tests of memory, reasoning, and planning after 30 minutes of spinning on a stationary bike than they did before they rode. They also completed the tests faster after pedaling."

"When Australia’s Tiffany Cromwell won the 2013 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad classic she had every right to be delighted – and one reason not to be. She’d just cemented her name on the European scene with what was arguably the biggest win to date in her career, trouncing Megan Gruanier of Rabobank in the sprint to seal a brilliant victory.
The win brought her the spotlight her talent deserved and gained her a reputation for being a no nonsense rider who could mix it with the best in the sport. Surely, a win like that will have brought in a nice little pot in prize money? Well, not quite.
For her suffering on that cold morning at the tail end of February last year, Cromwell picked up an altogether underwhelming 270 euro. After splitting that amongst her teammates she might just have had enough for a glass of vino and a plate of pasta down her local trattoria.
Compare that to the 65,135 euro prize money taken home by Luca Paolini of Katusha, the winner of the men’s edition, and you can see that there is something of a disparity between the money on offer between the men and the women in professional cycling."

"When his son turned 2, South Dakota dad Ryan McFarland bought him a tricycle and a bike with training wheels — each done up in racing stripes.
"My enthusiasm quickly turned to frustration as I watched my eager son of just 20 pounds struggle with the weight and complexity of these so-called 'children's bikes,'" McFarland says.
So McFarland, a dirt bike racer himself, started to rethink the traditional bicycle, looking for ways to turn it into a ride more suitable to his son. He thought about drilling holes or cutting away parts, but then he had an aha moment: He could get rid of the pedal system altogether.
What would provide propulsion instead? Feet."

"Does endurance cycling help you live longer? Take one look at cycling legend Brian Robinson, and you may have your answer.
Brian, aged 83, is a bone fide British cycling legend: the first Briton to finish the Tour de France in 1956 and the first to win a Tour stage in 1958.
He still lives in the village of Mirfield in West Yorkshire, where he was brought up, and still cycles twice a week.
"I do have a healthy lifestyle," he says. "I can recommend cycling. They say it gives you an extra 10 years of life - another decade would do me fine!"
You can get a sense of just how good Robinson was from his victory in the 20th stage of the 1959 Tour de France, from Annecy to Chalon-sur-Saone."

"Across America, entrepreneurs and seasoned executives are sidelining a popular networking activity -- golf -- in favor of a different group sport.
"Unlike golf, cycling is also a great equalizer," said Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists. "You're the same as the person riding next to you. So it makes people more approachable. "
Entrepreneurs also gravitate toward cycling because it's a better way to stay in shape, said Clarke. It's also less time consuming and relatively less expensive."

"It is not fully approved or completely finalized, but a document has circulated that shows Metro’s staff recommendations for open streets events for FY2015-16. Open streets events, or ciclovías, are car-free festivals primarily for bicycling and walking, more or less the same as Los Angeles’ popular CicLAvia.
So far in L.A. County, cities, primarily the city of Los Angeles, have partnered with the CicLAvia nonprofit organization to host these events. The new Metro list shows the popular event spreading out to new cities and new neighborhoods, and new cities working with new organizational partners.
Metro has become a major sponsor for open streets events, allocating $2 million in event funding for each of the next two fiscal years, July 1st through June 30th. The agency is allocating the funding to cities that apply. Metro received about two dozen applications, ranked them, and recommended funding twelve upcoming events."

"In a stunning development, two-time Cyclocross World Champion Niels Albert of Belgium announced his retirement today due to a potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmia. The problem was discovered recently during a medical check-up in preparation for the 2014 cyclocross season, and confirmed during a second check. While there is no mention of which type of arrhythmia Albert has (there are several types), it is one which should allow him to lead a normal life but which places that life at risk of cardiac arrest during high intensity activities, cyclocross being exhibit A in that category.
Albert was devastated. At a news conference in Leuven, he announced his decision to the world.
"This sudden farewell for myself and my surroundings a very heavy sledgehammer. Last season was one with many ups and downs. I was eager to be there next season, with a reborn Niels Albert. A great year.""

With her bike broken in two, Aravena was taken directly to Clinica Santa María and operated on late on Wednesday evening. While the operation was successful, the whole incident could have been avoided. The velodrome is the crown jewel in investment for the South American Games, but it came down to human error for the cause of the crash."
